Platelet-Rich Fibrin

What is Platelet-Rich Fibrin (PRF)?

Platelet-Rich Fibrin, or PRF, is characterized as a new second-generation platelet concentrate that uses components of your blood to stimulate the natural regeneration of soft and hard tissues, popularly used to add volume to areas of thin skin and restore hair growth. PRF injections involve a mix of platelets, fibrin, and white blood cells – so-called super healers – to accelerate the natural wound healing processes by generating collagen production and new cell growth.

PRF injections were initially developed to help people heal following oral or maxillofacial surgeries. Today PRF is used for numerous applications including skin and hair rejuvenation. As PRF infusions are strictly autologous (meaning they come from your own body) they can help control potential inflammation and stimulate local tissue regeneration without side effects or rejection.

How does PRF work?

Fibrin is a protein essential for blood clots and functions like a biological adhesive that, when activated, forms a matrix to capture platelets. The platelets collected in the fibrin mesh are stimulated to release growth factors that support bone and soft tissue healing. Growth factors stimulate collagen production which is needed to provide structure for your skin, thereby maintaining firmness and elasticity.

Keep in mind, natural collagen production reduces with age; PRF offers a natural way to boost your body’s innate collagen production. PRF facials are often used to improve skin tone, volume, and texture. Applied to the scalp, PRF helps with hair growth and texture. And used for filler volumization, PRF helps to fill facial folds and wrinkles, add volume to deflated cheeks, and tighten loose under-eye skin.

How is PRF prepared?

PRF is an autologous immune and platelet concentrate prepared simply with centrifuged blood. Using centrifugation to separate the blood components, a fibrin mesh like the one your body creates naturally during blood clotting is formed toward the top of the tube. Platelets are collected within the fibrin mesh while the remaining blood cells are concentrated at the bottom. This makes the platelet concentrate easy to separate from the other blood components and ready for immediate use.

How is PRF delivered?

After drawing your blood and separating the platelet-rich fibrin mesh from the other blood components, the PRF will be immediately injected into the targeted area where activated platelets release growth factors for 7 to 10 days. To ensure optimal results, the concentrate should be delivered within 15 minutes of centrifugation before the PRF solution coagulates and the platelets are newly stimulated.

Because the PRF procedure requires taking your blood, only a small amount of the PRF concentrate can be harvested in one session; a full PRF treatment requires 2 to 3 infusions spaced 6 to 8 weeks apart. As PRF charges your regenerative processes, it may take up to a full year to see peek results; however, the effects are long-lasting and can persist over a lifetime as long as you maintain good skincare.
